(January 30, 1961 – January 22, 2024)

Dexter Scott King was an activist, attorney, and author. He is the second son of civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. Dexter was only seven years old when his father was assassinated in 1968. He was watching television with his older brother, Martin Luther King III, when they saw a news flash about the shooting. King and his siblings were assured an education thanks to the help of Harry Belafonte. Harry set up a trust fund for the King children prior to their father's assassination.

Dexter was a dedicated vegan and animal rights activist. He was introduced to vegetarianism in the late 1980s by Dick Gregory. Dexter credits his diet for giving him strength to fight for justice. It’s hard to meet Dexter Scott King and not be reminded of his father. In 1999, he voiced his father in the educational film, Our Friend, Martin. The film was later nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program. Dexter King died of prostate cancer at his home in Malibu, California, on January 22, 2024, at the age of 62. He leaves behind his wife of 11 years, Leah Weber King.
