Remembering Frankie Beverly

Frankie Beverly was a renowned singer, songwriter, and producer. He was best known as the lead singer of the soul funk band Maze. Beverly's musical journey began in his hometown Philadelphia, where he formed a group called The Blenders during his teenage years. His early exposure to music laid the foundation for his future career. He later joined another band named The Butlers, where he gained experience in recording and giving live performances.

In the early 1970s, Beverly moved to San Francisco in pursuit of larger opportunities. There his band Raw Soul caught the attention of Marvin Gaye. Impressed by their talent, Gaye took the band under his wing, helping them secure a record deal and suggested a name change to Maze. With Frankie as the frontman, Maze released their debut album Maze featuring Frankie Beverly in 1977. The album was a commercial success, featuring hits like Happy Feelin's and While I'm Alone. The band's smooth blend of funk and R&B resonated with audiences, establishing them as a formidable force in the music industry.


Over the years, Maze released a series of successful albums, including Golden Time of Day (1978),  Inspiration (1979), and Joy and Pain (1980). Their music earned them a loyal fan base. Beyond their studio success, Maze became renowned for their electrifying live performances. Beverly's charisma and the band's tight musicianship made their concerts memorable experiences for audiences around the world. Despite changes in the music industry Maze maintained a loyal following over the decades.



Frankie Beverly's influence extends beyond his work with Maze. He was celebrated for his contributions to the soul and R&B genres, inspiring countless artists with his heartfelt lyrics and signature sound. On September 10, 2024, Frankie Beverly passed away at the age of 77. His dedication to his craft will be remebered forever.
